A Giant Journey: Connecting with Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone Africa

Last year, I was fortunate enough to meet Christian Kamara, the National General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Sierra Leone (YMCASL). He was visiting the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka as part of their international partnership. He was keen to hear about the work Digital Giants is doing to build the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka’s web presence, digital marketing strategy and the MyY program, which we created.

Through our discussion, it became very clear that the YMCASL could benefit from a web presence and digital marketing strategy. Christian had captivating and impactful stories to tell, but unfortunately, the YMCASL’s lack of web presence is keeping these stories and challenges from being shared. Let’s just say it was enough to get me thinking about how we could collaborate.

Empowering Young People for the African Renaissance

Sierra Leone is still emerging from a devastating civil war (1991-2002) that saw 50,000 people killed in combat, much of the country’s infrastructure destroyed, and over two million people displaced.

Due to the effects of the civil war, the country’s population is very young, with an estimated 42% under the age of 15. Many of these young people have not had the opportunity to attend a school or develop skills to succeed in the country’s rapidly developing resource-based economy. Since 1912, the YMCASL has played a large role in fostering growth in young people through its programs and core values: honesty, respect, tolerance, caring and spiritually uplifting.

21st Century Toolbox

Travel and discovering new places around the world is one of my great passions. I am also passionate about the power of digital literacy and marketing to transform organizations and lives. The chance to pursue two of my passions, and give back to a much-needed community, made this a life-changing opportunity.

As part of Digital Giants’ commitment to the YMCA as our global charity of choice, I’m thrilled to bring our web presence and digital marketing workshop to Sierra Leone. We’ll be conducting training sessions on modern marketing, the importance of brand in a connected world, and how to leverage search, social media and content marketing. Our efforts are aimed at equipping the YMCA in Sierra Leone with the tools they need to communicate, collaborate and sustain their organization in a digital environment.

Our partner Raesgo has already contributed their time and talent with the creation of the YMCA of Sierra Leone website.

I’m inviting you to join me as I discover this country, its people and the YMCA of Sierra Leone in future blog posts. Follow me on Twitter and on this blog.
